CLARITY
Diamond clarity is broken down into different
categories according to the number of inclusions in the diamond. Inclusions
are defects in the diamond itself, whether it be a crack, carbon spot,
feathering of the crystal, or a surface blemish. The categories start
with F-IF (flawless to internally flawless), VVS1-2 (very, very slight
inclusions), VS1-2 (very slight inclusions), SI1-2 (slight inclusions),
and I1-3 (imperfect).
There are different grades among each category
described in the clarity
chart. A jeweler’s 10X magnified loupe
is the easiest way to view a diamond. If you can see inclusions at
first glance with a loupe, you have an SI stone in your hands. If
you really have to struggle to find an inclusion, chances are you
are looking at a VS or better stone.
While VS quality diamonds tend to hold a higher value and are considered
investment grade, we still see plenty of SI diamonds that would make
an owner proud to display. In fact, SI diamonds are more common in
jewelry than any other grade. We don’t recommend I clarity diamonds
as these have inclusions that by definition are visible to the unaided
eye.
Be careful of clarity enhanced diamonds. This is a process where
a filler is used to give a diamond better clarity by hiding inclusions
and cracks. It takes away from the value, but gives you a cleaner
stone. Another process used to hide inclusions is laser enhancement.
This turns a dark carbon spot to a lighter shade where it’s
not noticeable. While GIA will certify a lasered diamond, it still
diminishes the value. I don’t recommend either one of these
and a jeweler is supposed to disclose this information. If the information
is not volunteered, be sure to ask whether or not the diamond you
are viewing is clarity enhanced.
